572. Dear Mike,

Of course it would be you who'd notice that I didn't mention whether or not I like BSG. (So observant!)

I love BSG.

However me saying so in the last post would have tempted me into the following rant (and my post was already much too long):

I hate my DVD player. Stupid thing skips back to old chapters, and has a peculiar fondness for doing so during climatic moments of BSG.

Admittedly, I only partially hate my DVD player. It had a long life, 8 dutiful years of service.

Off to some giant super electronics mega (annoying) store I go for a new bright and shiny DVD player. (Any recommendation for a DVD player under $100 is greatly appreciated!)

Your blogging buddy,

Tart! It's Battlestar Galactica! Sheesh.

And I hate my DVD player too. Next time I'm buying one that ignores all those instructions on the disc about what I can forward through and what I can't.

Holy early adoption -- 8 years?!

Once I resisted the temptation to get a DVD recorder, I settled on a $60 Philips player at Target recently. (The 6-year-old PlayStation 2 that had been playing our DVDs -- a lot more than games -- decided it only wanted to play pristine discs.) No complaints, really.

You can double that and get bells-and-whistles that are useful if you have an HDTV, which we don't. Even if you do, you might be just as well-off getting something cheap until the high-definition DVD format war is over. At present prices, DVD players are all but disposable.

Mike: If there isn't a Circle of Hell set aside for DVD producers who want to glue our eyeballs to CGI production company logos and assorted advertising material (esp. on children's discs), there should be.

Such an informal post! You like BSG? I'm gonna have to get into it! I keep meaning to check it out!

-and wow, you've had your DVD player for 8 YEARS? =P. DVD players are cheap now..Shop around I've seen some at my work for $20 but they're cheap no-name brands. You can probably get a decent one for $40-60.

Hope this helped.

Tart: Battlestar Galactica. It's very good!

Mike: I think we should declare a war on all DVD players, and condemn them to the circle of hell Tom mentioned in his comment!

Tom: Yes! When R and I bought the thing the selection of movies on DVD was quite small at our local video store. In fact, the big laser disks had a bigger selection. R watches his DVDs on the PlayStation. He doesn't have the skipping problem the player has.

Kevin: Thanks for the info!

I saw a Daewoo at my local grocery store (Shoprite) today for around $20-30.

And what about your LaserDisc player, or your Betamax?

At this point, dual decks are running around $50, while DVD recorders are running less than US$100. So you didn't exactly place a budgetary limit there, except not to go to HD.

Ken: Thanks for chiming in and the info! I bought a Kenwood at BestBuy for $50--it's not even a recorder. I think I overpaid!

I went straight from VHS to DVD. Skipped the LaserDisc. Betamax sounds like a superhero name, and I've never owned a camcorder! (I've disappointed you all again. Haven't I.)
