485. Song and step.

I had to run to the office supply store before opening my showroom this morning. It was a beautiful Bay Area foggy morning, perfect for driving with the top down. I got out of the car and noticed that two women who were heading to a SUV, stopped and stared at me. They were smiling. I realized that I was singing, so I stopped, and returned the smile.

"Teacher?" one of the women asked me.

"I'm sorry?" I replied.

"Are you a teacher?"

"No...?" Not that I didn't know that I'm not a teacher, but internally, I wondered why she asked me if I was one. I hoped it wasn't out of concern for my would-be students.

"I just said to my friend, the only people here this early are teachers," she explained.

"Oh!" I said, finally understanding. School starts, for some, next week. "I'm a small business owner, the only other group who shops here on a Saturday."

"It's the bounce in your step," she said. "I was certain you were a teacher."

"I'm feeling bouncy!" I enthusiastically replied. I felt safe showing my happy self to her, as she and her friend looked jovial, too.

We wished each other a nice weekend, and I bounced my way into the office supply store. It was Teacher Appreciation Day inside. Discounts for teachers, free donuts and coffee. No wonder the two ladies were happy!

The only grumpy grumps walking around in the place were its employees. I say, "Let them eat donuts!" Wouldn't the world be a happier place if everybody had a donut?

I'll take mine gluten-free, please.

Misheard lyrics:

James' song Seven

Actual:
God made love to me
Soothed away my gravity
Made me a pair of angel's wings
Clear vision and some magic things

Heard:
Clear vision and some magic beans
