262. Another rant.

My car has been in the shop this past week. I can't tell you how excited I am to pick it up tomorrow.

I've been driving around in this thing:

The Buick Rendezvous. Rendez-YUCK!

I'm against SUVs on principle. I think it's ridiculous to drive around solo in a vehicle that can seat most of the people in my neighborhood. And then there's the gas thing. And the safety thing. (Imagine a SUV and Miata impact--Who's getting squished? And what about pedestrians?) And the gas thing. And the pollution thing. And, well, you get the point.

My service guy is slowly learning. The last time I had my car serviced he gave me a Ford Expedition to drive. Imagine a modern steel and glass building. On wheels. It was bigger than that. It had 3 rows of seat. It was so big, each row had climate control consoles.

I complained, and so this time he gave me a vehicle with only 2 rows of seats. It's like driving a large house.

I think they purposefully give me these monstrous... monstrosities to drive so that by the time my car is ready I'm so excited that I won't even look at the bill when I hand them my debit card.

(Buick: Automatic headlights? There's nothing automatic about them, unless automatic means they are always on! I think I know when to turn on the headlights, thank you very much. And, what's with the doors automatically locking when I start the car? Very annoying, people. Very annoying! And why doesn't the "Unlock" button on the key unlock ALL doors? Why do I have to open up the driver door to unlock the passenger door? WHY??? It's just maddening! Your SUV sucks. I hate it.)

OK, my threshold question is where you're taking it that they're not giving you a Cayenne or something like that.

As for your parenthetical gripes, GM was an early adopter of daytime running lights in the U.S., but they seem to be spreading. Toyotas, notably, all have 'em.

One nice thing about automatic lights is that they'll automatically turn themselves on and off for parking garages. The dumb thing about them is that they're not connected to the windshield wiper switch, so if it isn't dark enough otherwise to make them turn on, they're not so automatic.

The automatic locking (and unlocking) is disconcerting and annoying; my new car is the first I've had that does such a thing. *That's* where I think I can make a better decision than the car.

I'm sure some would say I'm very pound foolish: I only bring my car to the dealer in Marin. Sonnen Porsche has an excellent service department. I swear, they love my car as much as I do. They are always so busy, and run out of loaners by the time I get up there to drop off my car. I should really reserve one when I schedule, but I always forget. They pay for the rental, of course.

Another annoying thing about that SUV's lock: getting out of the car is a 2-step process. Simply opening the door with the lever doesn't work. One has to hit the unlock button, then pull on the door handle. Maybe it's a theft deterrent feature, but it was quite cumbersome.
