Was it there for inventory control? Damn you, cheese thieves! Making everybody else pay because you think are above the law...
Security purposes? Keeping our world safe by monitoring rogue cheese activities... Imported cheeses are not to be trusted! They come from nations who harbor Evil Doers!
Oh... another question added to Life's Little Mysteries list.

Used for inventory tracking, scary thing is, depending on the embedded technology – transmitter distance, someone at the “home office” may be able to determine where you live. Or at least where you took the cheese after leaving the store. Big Brother is crazy scary.
I can think of 2 explanations:
1. The sensor is there to protect against the modern Jean Valjean, who cannot live by bread alone.
2. European cheese packagers received a high number of consumer requests for squeaky sounds like they get with Wisconsin cheese curds. Unable to replicate that sound, they added the electronic sensor as a prize.
Oh!!!! I understand now. Thanks, guys! ;)
