686. "I'm taking the Bjørn Lomborg position."

I was tagged again. More accurately, I was "tagged back." Remember back in the day, when you were a tiny tot playing tag during recess and there was always one annoying kid who "tagged back" and when you protested that that wasn't fair, he said, "You didn't say 'No Tag-Bags'!"*

God, I hated that kid.

Well, that kid grew up to be Mike. Who knew that he would turn into a charming and witty man who keeps a very entertaining blog, and somebody who I could no longer hate?

Mike invented this funny and sardonic meme in answer to the one I tagged him with. As you probably guessed, he tagged me back.

I feel very inferior that I couldn't answer it in the same vain as it was written... Oh well. Here goes nothing:

  • Religions other than my own are wrong because ______
    • if they were right they would be my own.
  • Although it's not politically correct, I like to make fun of _____
    • other liberals. Many get so caught up in their own self-righteousness that they often fail to consider how they are perceived by those who don't agree with them. (Or they make the fatal decision to not care how they are perceived.) More about this below**, lest I call the kettle black.
  • Ways that George Bush is not like the Anti Christ include ______

      1) The Anti Christ is a fictional character and unfortunately George Bush is not.

      2) If the Anti Christ actually exists or existed I imagine that he/she would not proclaim to be a Born Again. Or maybe they would... Ooo, the Anti Christ is a tricky one!

  • The celebrity rumor that I wish to start is _____
    • Paris Hilton is a transgender person. (My apologies to the transgenders among us for giving you Paris Hilton.)
  • Kids suck because _____
    • One kid in particular inspired this sucky question. Ergo, kids suck.

    That was fun. Thanks, Mike!

    ...............
*Oops, I meant "Tag-Backs," but Tag-Bag is too funny to correct and it sounds like a good insult. Mike is a Tag-Bag. :)

    ** Continued from above:
For instance, Charlie Rose in an interview with Michael Crichton I caught on Google Video yesterday, became very emphatic and dangerously close to belligerence when the topic of Crichton's controversial book State of Fear came up. Michael Crichton spent 3 years researching global warming and related data for his book, and believes that the current political, media and social frenzy concerning global warming is the product of many components (the human propensity and love of drama especially when it concerns catastrophe, politics, money, etc.) none of which involves a serious consideration and analysis of the hard data. (Hence, the title of my post... it's a direct Crichton quote from the interview. Personally, I was of the "Al Gore is right" camp, that is global warming is a catastrophe. It also has the honor of being a recipient of my Bad Design of the Week award.) Charlie Rose, who is my favorite interviewer and one of my several celebrity crush objects, started to sound a bit silly with his repetitive sole "everybody else says so" argument.

I was a proud member of the Chicken Little crowd, and I am still concerned about the environment, but I do agree with Crichton: Nobody can predict the future, and there are other problems that can actually be remedied with less effort and money. (Not that we shouldn't ignore or try to combat the very real environmental problems.)

I wonder if there is a way to elicit a similar catastrophic-passion for hunger and homelessness. Hunger and Homelessness: the real cause of Global Warming a new film by Jimmy Carter?

When Crichton's sources for his book (e.g., Greg Benford) say explicitly that Crichton has misstated their research, his credibility approaches zero.

It reached it when he made that Boston Globe (iirc) columnist a pederast in his most recent because he had the temerity to point out that the science was wrong in that one.

It's not just that everyone believes; it's that the evidence belies the Lomborg position.

Ken: Thank you so much for your comment. It inspired me to do some research about this topic and to write a new post about this. I'm embarrassed that I took the interview at face value. A quick google search would have given me enough pause to think more about this subject rather than firing off a post.
