I had my maiden sailing experience on Saturday. I couldn't have dreamt of a better first aquatic adventure. It all happened on a beautiful day, and on a beautifully restored Erickson 46, named Aiki. Its owners, Captain and Admiral, are experienced sailors and glorious individuals. My other shipmates were also experienced seafaring creatures and delightful to hang with.
The boat (yacht) was large enough for me to relax in the cockpit without getting in the way of "line" (it's not called "rope") pulling and ratcheting. I lent a hand only when I felt compelled and confident. And, because of the good coaching from the Captain and other Shipmates, I did!
I'm hooked, or rather, cleat hitched. How could I knot be?
A cleat hitch, and an appropriate nautical "hook" metaphor replacement.
After we tacked up the estuary a couple of times, we returned back to the dock. Did the Captain and Admiral rest on their seafaring laurels? No! They prepared a 3 course feast a la fondue. Fun-do, I say!
I knew I was in for a vocabulary and literary experience when the thing I would call an awning was referred to as a "Bimini." (You may recognize Bimini as the place located in the Bahamas and where Juan Ponce de León searched for his Fountain of Youth.) So many of our everyday words and phrases have origins from our sea traveling days. For example, telltales; they are and they do!
On Sunday I met and spent a good part of the day with a fellow blogger. More about that on the next post! I had so much fun, that I was almost late to my next function: a dinner party and piano recital. I would throw one, too, and play Mary had a Little Lamb, since that's about as much as I could play, if somebody bought me one of these:
Heck, if you bought me one of these, I'd give you a kiss.
Did you know that Franz Schubert composed "The Spinning Wheel" for Goethe's story Faust and the scene "Gretchen's Room"? I haven't the words to describe the passion, pain, and soulful love longing depth of the song. Exquisite. Played on a Bösendorfer, it was divine.
I imagined Johann (Goethe) sitting next to me as my eyes swelled with tears. He handed me a Kleenex* with bittersweet pride.

* I wrote "Kleenex" instead of "tissue" for the Captain. He knows why. :)

I may knot ever forgive you for that pun.
Would you forgive me if I invited you over for FunDo?

drpidtg (drepid'tug): the trepidation felt when you hear a drippy song that pulls at your heart strings.
"I hope I don't start crying!"
Oh all right. :-) I can't stand to see a woman cry.
