305. A reason to live!

We watched Serenity again last night. I've seen it about a half a dozen times, and I don't think I'll ever get sick of it. It is a wonderful movie spun from the "failed" TV show Firefly, a brilliant show that inexplicably missed viewers.

(We own the all the TV episodes on DVD as well. I've watched those more than I care to count.)

Joss Whedon is one of those genius film makers, and an amazing script writer to boot. (A rare combination, it seems.) Because the dialog is so witty, so earthy-flirty, at times snappy, it takes me a little longer to appreciate the journey he has taken me on.

By the way, it's science fiction. The best kind. The science fiction is the fun background to the human stories and adventures.

OK, honestly, I really just wanted to write about this cute scene from Serenity. After you read it, you'll see why I wrote all the fluff stuff first. (Or, maybe you won't!)

Simon and Kaylee are shipmates, and the sweetest people on the show. Their attraction to each other is obvious, but not overly so. Simon is the ship's doctor and he has the difficult task of watching his mentally unstable sister.

Simon and Kaylee, along with the rest of the crew, are going into battle. It's a hopeless situation, they're feeling hopeless, because they know that they will most likely not live to see the next hour:

Simon: "My one regret in all of this, is never being with you."
Kaylee: "With me? You mean to say as... sex?"
Simon: "I mean to say..."
Kaylee: "To hell with this! I'm gonna live!"

Here is a site that has other Serenity quote gems.

What's with these great TV shows not finding an audience? Another fantastic show that didn't survive past its first season is Wonderfalls. Rent them (the episodes) if you haven't already!
